La Colombe has been named ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at the Eat Out Woolworth Awards 2023. The annual Grand Celebration took place at the GrandWest Grand Arena in Cape Town on Sunday, and it was attended by more than 800 guests including some of the best Chefs, Restaurant owners, food personalities across the hospitality industry who came in numbers to celebrate the winners of the day.
Executive Chef James Gaag was full of delight when he went on stage to receive the award. In the podium he thanked Eat Out Woolworths Awards for the honorary award, further thanking every single person who had dined in their establishment over the past year.


La Colombe, one of Cape Town’s most well-loved and awarded restaurants for its mix of Contemporary French with Asian fine dining famous for its best-selling beans, gear, and cold brew from La Colombe Coffee Roasters.
“Thank you, Eat Out Woolworths, for this honour which would not have been possible without the passion and dedication of our incredible team. I also would like to thank everyone who has dined with over the past year. The consistent support is what makes us constantly strive to be the best we can be. Food is theatre, and the show is dedicated to you.” Gaag said.
Valpre Rising Star went to Anwar Abdullatief from The Happy Uncles, a restaurant known for fine dining experience that comes fully in a Halal form. When he opened his restaurants in 2022, Anwar has long been cooking in his production kitchen, catering for events. He has also been accredited by globally acclaimed restaurants like Siba Mtongana and Rupert & Rothschild.



The Happy Uncles is situated in Salt River is the dream of chef Anwar Abdullatief, a business that started as a production kitchen catering for events, before opening as a fine-dining restaurant in the first half of 2022.
The restaurant is most loved for its best dishes amongst many others, the west coast squid with dune spinach and smoked mussel velouté, as well as aged beef sirloin with spiced bone marrow.
