Globally acclaimed, Esther Mahlangu was overjoyed when her new studios recently, when her historic, long awaited modern art studio was finally launched at her home in Mthobothini, Kwandebele, which marked a vibrant celebration of creativity and cultural heritage.
The art studio was handed over by Thungela, a leading energy and natural resource company and it aims not only on the arts but has been vowed to be a learning centre for the youth.
During the event, the 88-year-old passionately encouraged the youth to embrace their artistic voices and explore their unique identities through art. Esther emphasized the importance of staying connected to one’s roots while also being open to new influences.
She shared stories from her own journey, highlighting how art can serve as a powerful tool for self-expression and community connection. By nurturing their creativity, young artists can contribute to their culture and inspire future generations. Esther’s words resonated with the audience, reminding them that art is not just a profession but a vital part of their identity and heritage. Her studio aims to be a space of learning, collaboration, and empowerment for all aspiring artists.
“This studio is not just for me, but for the entire KwaNdebele nation. Today, I am filled with gratitude, and I want to thank Thungela, the Mpumalanga government, our traditional leaders, and partners who were involved in making this art studio possible.” said Mahlangu.
The launch comes during the September month which is marked in South Africa’s calendar to be a period where culture and heritage are commemorated through art of fashion, contemporary, food and more.
Mahlangu was a disruptor since her young age, becoming the first person to reimagine the Ndebele design that is well-known and mostly used for decorating houses on contemporary spaces..
She has travelled the world with her stand-out KwaNdebele art pieces, putting both Mpumalanga and South Africa on the map as she continues to stun the world, collaborating with big car brands such as BMW, Porche . Inside the art studio is gathered pieces of her own work, including the tea brand, Freshpak’s KwaNdebele printed box.
Her artwork is also displayed in specially defined streets of the most popular streets in the most prominent states of the globe, including the 2023 recently displayed in New York’s bicycle parking lot.
